Progressive Realism in a Hostile World

• At a time where Bashar al Assad has for years poisoned innocent women, children and noncombatant men with criminal gas-warfare — prohibited by international legal convention;

• Putin commits war crimes in Ukraine through Putin’s criminal bombing of children’s hospitals, shopping malls, kindergartens:

• Putin sends henchmen to Germany to assassinate a major legitimate arms-manufacturer — stopped only by joint intervention of the CIA and the Bundesinneministerium (Federal Interior Ministry);

• Hamas (with its genocidal ideology) terrorizes and murders Israeli citizens of a small border town, captures hostages, incinerates their village;

• Benjamin Netanyahu responds, not be protecting Israel, but with war crimes in bombing a major hospital, emergency food trucks, ambulances, an Orthodox Church, a heavily populated refugee camp, and refuses to listen to the Biden Administration’s pleas to stop war crimes and to instead concentrate on the mission at hand — namely, to target known terrorists — which is a hard mission, but one which may be accomplished;

• The Peoples Republic of China has extended immeasurably its strategic reach through the Far and Middle East with its Bridge and Roads Initiative;

• The Peoples Republic of China, through the Initiative has obtained naval ports in countries indebted to China for China’s insidious support of Third-World infrastructure;

• Narendra Modi, with India traditionally as a Counter-Balance to the Peoples Republic of China, now has perverted his country’s Democracy into a theocratic terror against peaceful Muslims and Sikhs;

• A growing extreme right-wing movement throughout Europe, where, even with left-leaning victories in England, France and Poland, at least in England, the racists allies of Mr. Brexit, Nigel Farage (so-called “Reform Party”) where Party allies embarrassingly deny the Holocaust, and France’s Marine Le Pen, each of “Reform Party” and “Rassemblement National” (“Front National”) had managed to gain seats in their country’s respective Parliament(!) despite centrists and liberals stopping them from gaining control;

• In Germany, the normally responsible citizenry, have grown the influence of the SS-tolerating AfD (Alternative für Deutschland — “Alternative for Germany”) in Thüringen, Sachsen and Sachsen Anhalt;

• In America, Project 2025 has developed, through the perversely expert help of the right-wing Heritage Foundation, a comprehensive plan for a potential 2025 Trump Administration to put the “Unitary Executive” (read: Dictator) theories counseled by John Yoo (currently, Law Professor, University of California, BOALT HALL, Berkeley) and implemented by Dick Cheney, then-Vice President, and President George W. Bush), now on steroids through “Immunity from Prosecution” newly found by the helpful U.S. Supreme Court — Yes, Heritage wants to put Trump in a position of “Unitary Executive” on steroids to — Kill meritorious service safeguards in the U.S. Civil Service; Replace meritorious civil service to 19th Century concepts of “To the Victors belong the Spoils”; Resulting in a non-expert but highly ideological civil service, a large body of toadies for Trump;

• Where a potential Trump Administration would quite possibly pull out of NATO; and,

• An age of widely dispersed nuclear weapons development in such radical lands as Iran and North Korea.

Yes, against this backdrop, the new Labour Government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer has installed this man as Foreign Minister:

The Rt Honorable David Lammy, MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs

And that is very good news, indeed.

Foreign Minister Lammy intends to revive doctrine of Robin Cook, who in the 1990s was the UK Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister Tony Blair.

I will never forget my heady feeling in the mid-1990s, when there was the beautiful trifecta of Bill Clinton (Democrat), Tony Blair (Labour), and Gerhard Schroeder (Sozial Demokrat).*

*That was then. Gerhard Schroeder has since disgraced himself with his executive positions with Russia’s natural gas industry, with which Schroeder ethically and politically compromised the province (Bundesland) Mecklenburg-Pommern (near Berlin).

Just now, Foreign Minister Lammy has promulgated “Progressive Realism” as the Doctrine of British Foreign Policy under this Labour Regime.

Under Foreign Minister Lammy, Britain looks to:

• Strengthen NATO;

• Without saying so, “Trump-Proof” NATO (sub silentio);

• Create such close relations with the European Union (EU) as to resemble without resurrecting EU Membership;

• Increase Defense Spending and work with NATO members on maintaining strong defenses for the West;

• Engage in Foreign Policy that encourages Western, Democratic values;

• Ensure the security of NATO and the EU from the aggression of Vladimir Putin;

• Support the Geneva/Hague accords in war-zones — Mr. Lammy expressed disapproval of the U.S. “red line” against Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical warfare but (under Obama) our inaction in face of Assad’s war crime — under Lammy, this sort of war crime would have consequences;

• Engage with Western Powers, the Commonwealth, and such powers as South Korea and Japan to deter overly aggressive incursions of the Peoples Republic of China;

• In line with Robin Cook’s foreign policy doctrine, protect first the security of the United Kingdom and at the same time to engage a vision of foreign policy with Robin Cook’s “ethical dimension.”

I can only state in part the full program as Foreign Minister Lammy unrolls it. Mr. Lammy has only been in office a few days.

Together with Pierre Schill — who has promised that, if requested, France would be able within one month to send thirty-thousand, over the long-term another 30,000 (a total of 60,000) French infantry to fight in Ukraine to prevent further territorial incursions by Russia — Mr. Lammy would undergird a realistic foreign policy towards Russian incursions to deter Putin through a united, strong Europe.

NATO — no matter the results of any American election — is better prepared, through the realistic and progressive foreign policy engaged by President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The addition of Finland and Sweden to NATO fortifies the steel border circumscribing Putin’s violent ambitions — a steel border undergirded now by Scandinavia, the Baltic Three (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania) and surrounded in the West by allies Poland and Rumania.

Under President Joe Biden and Secretary Blinken there is a path forward to special conditions for entry into NATO: Apparently, Russia would retain some territory conquered, but in the integral territory of the sovereign Ukraine, that country would be a NATO member entitled to defense under Article 5.

Under President Joe Biden and the influence of Secretary Blinken, EU members are vastly increasing defense expenditures and defense policy, remarkably even including Germany (somewhat pacifist with smarting over its genocidal war crimes of the last world war).

No matter the results of the election on November 5th, the Biden/Blinken Foreign Policy Doctrine will be alive and well in Europe and many parts of the world, through the strong and growing alliance of two “Odd-Fellow” neighbors that don’t naturally like each other — Japan and South Korea, through a greatly strengthened and increasingly resolute NATO, and by a powerful naval and air power: The United Kingdom under the resolute Doctrine of Foreign Minister David Lammy.
